  • Course objectives and content

    Students on the advanced musicology cycle must :

     

    - validate two main subjects chosen from the following four:

     

    Theoretical and Applied Analysis, Aesthetics, History of Music and Music Culture.

    complete at least three dissertations in the two chosen disciplines.

     

    Six pairs of disciplines are therefore possible:

     

    • Theoretical and Applied Analysis + Aesthetics
    • Theoretical and applied analysis + History of music
    • Theoretical and Applied Analysis + Music Culture Professions
    • Aesthetics + History of Music
    • Aesthetics + careers in musical culture
    • History of music + careers in musical culture

     

    • and eleven compulsory and optional complementary disciplines with a view to obtaining a2nd cycle higher diploma in musicology conferring the grade of Master. In this case, the course of study is signposted;

     

    - or, subject to certain conditions (having previously obtained another Master's degree in musicology), validate one or more core disciplines, as well as complementary disciplines, without aiming to obtain a Master's-level2nd cycle diploma in musicology. In this case, the course of study is free.

     

    The organisation of the course (choice and order of main and complementary subjects, distribution of subjects over 3 to 5 years) is decided in consultation with the teaching staff.

    Erasmus exchanges are possible in this cycle.

     

    The upper cycle aims to develop :

     

    - critical and personal reflection on the various fields of music and their applications (research, publishing, publications, exhibitions, etc.) based on a very thorough musical culture.

    - the acquisition of theoretical, practical and professional methodological tools.

    - the ability to design and carry out independent research and artistic projects.

    - the ability to enter professional life (research, publishing, teaching, artistic production and programming, cultural mediation, etc.).

    The completion of one or more research dissertations is required in each of these main disciplines (Theoretical and applied analysis = 1 dissertation; Aesthetics = 2 dissertations; History of music = 3 dissertations; Professions in musical culture = 2 dissertations).

     

    All courses are taught in French (with the exception of language courses). For detailed objectives and content, see the study pathways for each discipline.

     

    UNIVERSITY DEGREE

     

    A partnership between the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris and Sorbonne University enables students from the Conservatoire who so wish, and who have been admitted to the higher musicology cycle, to obtain, together with the higher diploma from the Conservatoire and subject to fulfilling the conditions for enrolment at the university, the licence de Musique et Musicologie from Sorbonne-Université, comprising :

     

    • Obtaining the following awards at the Paris Conservatoire:
      • A prize in one of the main disciplines of the higher cycle of musicology
      • Two certificates in methodology
    • Validation at the University of four 26-hour courses, spread over four semesters, chosen from the "Musicological fields" teaching units.

    Registration and payment of fees at the University are required to follow the courses.

  • French language certificate

    Successful candidates who are not nationals of French-speaking countries must present,

    - before 30 June preceding their first enrolment at the Conservatoire, a certificate issued by a body approved by the French government attesting to a level of French at least equal to B1 on the Council of Europe's scale of common reference levels

    - and before 10 December of the year of enrolment, a certificate from a body recognised by the French government attesting to a level of French at least equal to B2 on the Council of Europe's scale of common reference levels.

Postgraduate course in Musicology - History of music

1. ELIMINATORY TESTS

These tests are common to the entrance examinations for the preparatory cycle and the entrance examinations for the higher cycle of musicology (classes in Theoretical and Applied Analysis, Aesthetics and History of Music).
Candidates who pass the eliminatory tests are eligible for all subsequent competitive examinations.

1.1 Formation musicale

Written tests (duration: 1h30)
1. Dictation with missing parts from the recorded repertoire, which may include rhythmic, melodic and harmonic notes.
2. Monodic atonal statement and recognition of cadences and keys.

- Oral tests

Performance in an orchestral conductor including transposing instruments, with rhythmic and sung reading on audio support (prior boxing: 10 minutes).

The following are exempt from these tests

  • students or former students in the advanced writing, composition, orchestration, conducting, accompaniment, keyboard improvisation, voice conducting, vocal accompaniment and choreographic accompaniment classes at the CNSMDP ;
  • instrumentalist students who have passed the exemption examination or obtained the Music Training certificate at the CNSMDP;
  • holders of the Diplôme d'État de Formation musicale ;
  • holders of the following Certificats d'Aptitude : Formation musicale, Culture musicale, Écriture, Accompagnement, Professeur animateur et Directeur.
  • Candidates eligible for the agrégation in music;
  • Holders of a DEM in music training or orchestral conducting;

Proof of these qualifications must be provided at the time of registration.

1.2 Vocal or instrumental practice
Performance of a work or excerpt from a work of the candidate's choice lasting no more than 5 minutes.

This test is waived for

  • students or former students in the instrumental classes of a CNSM ;
  • holders of a DE or Certificat d'Aptitude in instrument or singing;
  • holders of a specialised cycle award (acquired) from a CRD or CRR, a conservatoire d'arrondissement de Paris, a brevet d'exécution from the Ecole normale de musique de Paris, or their equivalent from a school abroad, less than five years old.

Proof of these qualifications must be provided at the time of registration.



2.ADMISSION TESTS
The admission tests consist of two modules: one common to all subjects and one specific to each subject.

Module 1: (Duration: 4 h)
Test common to all three disciplines.
Three listening commentaries, one of which must include a score. The commentaries may be accompanied by questions on specific points of analysis. Each work or excerpt from a work will be played two or three times.

Exemptions :

- candidates who have already passed the entrance examination for the Musicology and Analysis department.

- candidates who have held the certificate in History of Music - Chronological and Synthetic Study (mention Bien or Très Bien) for less than 5 years.

Module 2a: (Duration: 4 h)
Examination common to Aesthetics and Music History: essay and/or text commentary.

Exemptions :

- candidates who have already passed the entrance examination for the Musicology and Analysis department;
- holders of the Certificat d'Histoire de la musique, étude chronologique et synthétique (formerly Histoire de la musique B) with distinction;

Candidates who pass these entrance examinations will be eligible for all subsequent entrance examinations.

3. ADMISSION TEST

Oral test
Dressing room (duration: 2 h) and passage time (duration 40 min: 20 min presentation and 20 min discussion)
Study of a file containing 5 to 7 documents (scores, literary documents, iconographic documents) dating from the 17th century to the second half of the 20th century. When appearing before the jury, the candidate comments on one or two documents of his/her choice and chooses the respective importance he/she intends to give to each document.

Students who qualify for the competitive entrance examination to the Higher Musicology Cycle but fail the admission tests may, if they wish, be admitted to the preparatory cycle.

N.B.: Candidates re-admitted to the competitive entrance examination for the 2nd cycle who are not nationals of French-speaking countries must present
- before 30 June preceding their first enrolment at the Conservatoire, a certificate issued by a body approved by the French government attesting to a level of French at least equal to B1 on the Council of Europe's scale of common reference levels
- and before 10 December following their first enrolment, a certificate issued by a body recognised by the French government attesting to a level of French at least equal to B2 on the Council of Europe's scale of common reference levels.

1.1 Musical training

  • Written tests (duration: 1h30)

    • Monodic atonal statement and recognition of cadences and keys.
  • Oral test
    • Walk through an orchestral conductor including transposing instruments with rhythmic and sung reading on audio support (prior dressing room: 10 minutes).

These tests are common to the entrance examinations for the Advanced Musicology Cycle (Theoretical and Applied Analysis, Aesthetics, History of Music and Music Culture) and the Preparatory Cycle.

The following are exempt from this test

  • students or former students in the advanced writing, composition, orchestration, conducting, accompaniment, keyboard improvisation, voice conducting, vocal accompaniment and choreographic accompaniment classes at the Paris Conservatoire;
  • instrumentalist students who have passed the exemption exam or obtained the Music Training certificate from the Paris Conservatoire;
  • holders of the Diplôme d'État de Formation musicale ;
  • holders of the following Certificats d'Aptitude : Formation musicale, Culture musicale, Écriture, Accompagnement, Professeur animateur et Directeur.
  • Candidates admitted to the agrégation in music;
  • Holders of a DEM in music training or orchestral conducting;

  • holders of a specialised cycle award (acquired) from a CRD or CRR, a Conservatoire Municipal d'Arrondissement de Paris, a brevet d'exécution from the Ecole Normale de Musique de Paris, or their equivalent from a school abroad, less than five years old.

Proof of these qualifications must be provided at the time of registration.

Candidates who have already passed the entrance examination for the Musicology and Analysis department are exempt.

3. Admission tests

Oral test
: appearance before the jury with a dressing room:

  • 1 hour in the box and 45 minutes in the viva: a commentary on a quotation and a question on the history of music (17th-20th centuries) chosen by lot.

N.B. : Candidates admitted to the competitive entrance examination for the2nd cycle who are not nationals of French-speaking countries must present, before 30 June preceding their first enrolment at the Conservatoire, a certificate issued by a body approved by the French government attesting to a level of French at least equal to B1 on the Council of Europe's scale of common reference levels, before 10 December following their first enrolment at the Conservatoire, a certificate issued by a body recognised by the French government attesting to a level of French at least equal to B2 on the Council of Europe's scale of common reference levels. In all cases, students who have not fulfilled the aforementioned obligations by the end of their studies will not receive the diploma for the course of study followed.

The course may be taken twice or three times.

The following are exempt

- candidates who have already passed the entrance examination for the Musicology and Analysis department.

- candidates who have held the certificate in History of Music - Chronological and Synthetic Study (mention Bien or Très Bien) for less than 5 years.

Module 2a: (Duration: 4 h)
Examination common to Aesthetics and Music History: essay and/or text commentary.

A commentary on a quotation and a music history question (17th-20th centuries) chosen by lot.
(1 hour in the box and 45 minutes in front of the jury).

Candidates who pass these eligibility tests will be eligible for all subsequent competitions.

3.ADMISSION TESTS

Written test (duration: 4 hours)

  • an analysis on score of a work or fragment of work in tonal idiom, including a brief formal analysis which may include a diagram and questions of harmonic, melodic or rhythmic analysis;

  • a score-based analysis of an excerpt from an orchestral work including, for example, questions about the orchestral instruments and a written reduction on two or three staves of a short excerpt from an orchestral score.

Oral test (Length: 10 min)
A short interview with the jury focusing in particular on the content of the written tests.

Students who qualify for the competitive entrance examination to the Higher Musicology Cycle but fail the admission tests may, if they wish, be admitted to the preparatory cycle.

Oral test

  • Presentation of a work for an informed public based on a documentary file including the score, a CD, historical information about the work, iconographic documents and a text (duration 20 minutes).
  • Commented identification of five musical incipits from the Middle Ages to the present day (10 minutes).
  • Motivational interview with the jury (15 minutes).

N.B.: Candidates who are re-admitted to the competitive entrance examination for the 2nd cycle who are not nationals of French-speaking countries must submit the following documents
- before 30 June preceding their first enrolment at the Conservatoire, a certificate issued by a body approved by the French government attesting to a level of French at least equal to B1 on the Council of Europe's scale of common reference levels
- and before 10 December following their first enrolment, a certificate issued by a body recognised by the French government attesting to a level of French at least equal to B2 on the Council of Europe's scale of common reference levels.
