Objectives and content
Discovering and learning to read facsimiles, knowing how to decipher and transcribe the main musical notations between 1100 and 1500; knowing the usual additions practicable according to the period(musica ficta).
Reading techniques (note figures and measures) for the following repertoires:
Saint-Martial de Limoges, Ecole de Notre-Dame, 13th-century motets, French Ars nova (Italian, optional), Ars subtilior, Franco-Flemish polyphony of the 15th and early 16th centuries.

Entrance terms and conditions
This course is one of the complementary disciplines required for the2nd cycle musicology degree conferring a master's degree (see study programme for the 2nd cycle musicology degree). It is open to all Conservatoire students (subject to availability). It is also one of the teaching units in the Professional Master's programme in 'The Practice of Medieval Music' at the University of Paris IV-Sorbonne (registration with the university).

Assessment terms and conditions
Written test: (duration: 6 h)
Diplomatic transcription of three or four extracts from pieces of different notations.
Oral test:
Sight-reading in front of the jury of a polyphony prepared in the lodge for 1 hour (30 min. individual preparation and 30 min. group preparation).
During the course of the course, participation in a public audition presenting different pieces prepared as an ensemble (15-minute programme).
