History of Early Music and the Renaissance

  • Objectives and content

    Acquisition of historical knowledge (cultural context, musicians' careers, institutions, etc.) and technical knowledge (analysis of works, musical language, codicology of manuscript sources, musical palaeography, comparison of discographic interpretations, etc.) specific to the musical repertoire of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance.

    Introduction to the methodology of musicological research applied to medieval and Renaissance music.

  • Entrance terms and conditions

    This course is compulsory for students in Music History (main subject) in their second or third year. This course is open to all Conservatoire students (subject to availability). It is one of the complementary disciplines required for the2nd cycle advanced musicology degree conferring a master's degree (see advanced musicology course of study).

  • Assessment terms and conditions

    CONTINUOUS ASSESSMENT

    Continuous assessment marks count for half of the final exam mark.

    Written assignments and oral presentations: reading notes, presentations, comparisons of interpretations, bibliographical and discographical research, analysis of works, summaries, etc.

    FINAL EXAMINATION

    Written test: (Length: 4 h)

    Writing a summary based on several documents (scores, quotations, images, facsimiles, recordings, etc.).

    Oral test: (Duration: 1 hour in the box + 30 minutes in front of the jury)

    Content: question(s) relating to the year's programme.

    If a dissertation is produced as part of this course and assessed at the end of the year, it may be validated as personal study work (TEP) after submission to the commission for validation of prior learning (VAA).
