INFORMATIONS

  • Objectives and content

    To offer a broad and synthetic perception of the evolution of Western music from Gregorian chant to the present day.

    Study of the spirit of the great periods: Middle Ages, Renaissance, Baroque, Classicism, Romanticism, Post-Romanticism and the 20th century.

    Practical work on writing, presentations and research (knowledge of the main bibliographical research tools, study of sources, introduction to palaeography, etc.).

  • Entrance terms and conditions

    This course is open to all Conservatoire students (subject to availability). It is compulsory for students on the preparatory cycle in musicology. It is one of the compulsory complementary subjects for the2nd cycle advanced musicology diploma, which confers a master's degree (see the advanced musicology cycle study programme).

  • Assessment terms and conditions

    CONTINUOUS ASSESSMENT

    • Oral work: class presentations, mediation (concert presentations, school events, reading concerts, etc.)
    • Written work: listening commentaries, reading notes, programme notes, palaeography exercises, etc.)
    • Essays (for first-year musicology preparatory cycle students)
    • A dissertation, depending on the course of study (see conditions in "Final exam").

    FINAL EXAMINATION

    Students on the preparatory musicology cycle

    Written tests :

    • 3 listening commentaries, each broadcast twice (one mark out of 30), duration: 3 hours
    • 1 essay (one mark out of 30), duration: 4 hours

    Oral examinations:

    1st year students: (dressing room 45 min. + oral 45 min.)

    • a course question drawn at random from a list of titles (between 9 and 12) given one month before the exam,
    • a presentation on a free subject related to the year's programme, agreed with the teacher,

    2nd year students: (dressing room 45 min. + oral 45 min. + dissertation 45 min.)

    • a course question drawn at random from a list of titles (between 9 and 12) given one month before the exam,
    • a presentation on a free subject related to the year's programme, agreed with the teacher,
    • presentation of the dissertation: a copy of the dissertation must be handed in 3 weeks before the date of the oral (marked out of 120: one mark out of 60 from the teacher and one mark out of 60 from the jury).

    Students on the Advanced Musicology Cycle

    Written test:

    • 3 listening commentaries (each broadcast twice) (one mark out of 30), duration: 3 h

    Oral tests: (dressing room 45 min. + oral 45 min. + under certain conditions: presentation of dissertation 45 min.)

    The nature of the tests is identical for1st and2nd year students.

    • a course question drawn at random from a list of titles (between 9 and 12) given one month before the exam,
    • a presentation on a free subject related to the year's programme, agreed with the teacher,

    • presentation of a dissertation, subject to certain conditions*: a copy of the dissertation must be submitted 3 weeks before the date of the oral. The year in which the dissertation is to be written and defended will be chosen in prior consultation with the teacher, at the start of the course (marked out of 120: one mark out of 60 by the teacher and one mark out of 60 by the jury).
      *Completion of a dissertation depends on the distribution of research work carried out in the main disciplines of the advanced musicology cycle and mainly concerns students in Theoretical and Applied Analysis and Music Culture. Cf. Cycle supérieur de musicologie study programme: "The2nd cycle supérieur de musicologie diploma conferring the grade of master is awarded after a maximum of five years when the student has completed at least three dissertations (validated in the main and optional disciplines)".
    Students on the1st or2nd higher cycles or on the higher cycle of instrumental or vocal disciplines, writing, composition, orchestral conducting or higher training in sound professions:

    Written test :

    • 3 listening commentaries (each broadcast twice) (one mark out of 30), duration: 3 hours

    Oral tests: (dressing room 45 min. + oral 45 min. + optional: dissertation presentation 45 min.)

    The nature of the tests is identical for1st and2nd year students.

    • a course question drawn at random from a list of titles (between 9 and 12) given one month before the exam,
    • a presentation on a free subject related to the year's programme, agreed with the teacher,
    • as an option: presentation of a dissertation (only one during the two years). Writing a dissertation is not compulsory. If a dissertation is produced as part of this course and is assessed at the end of the year, it may be validated as a personal study project (TEP) after submission to the commission for the validation of prior learning (VAA).

    The year in which the dissertation will be written and defended will be chosen in consultation with the teacher at the beginning of the course (marked out of 120: one mark out of 60 by the teacher and one mark out of 60 by the jury).

    A copy of the dissertation must be submitted 3 weeks before the date of the oral.
