    The grade of the2nd cycle diploma conferring the grade of Master is the grade obtained in the free recital of the second year of the2nd cycle.

  • Course objectives and content

    The aims of this course are to :

    • to give the instrumentalists concerned freedom in their playing, a capacity for invention and a grasp of extremely varied styles ;
    • to complement studies in writing, accompaniment, conducting and composition with creative instrumental practice.

    The Diplôme de2e cycle supérieur d'Improvisation au clavier conferring the grade of Master is awarded to the student when he or she has obtained all of the following awards :

Keyboard improvisation - Piano (2nd cycle)

Description :

This competition is open to candidates who hold, in France, a Diplôme national supérieur professionnel de musicien (DNSPM), or, in other countries, a diploma of1st cycle piano or piano improvisation.

Candidates who do not obtain the required diploma in full until the end of the school year may take the competitive entrance examination by enclosing a school attendance certificate specifying their situation. If they are successful in the competitive entrance examination, they will not be granted final admission until they have presented the full diploma required, no later than 30 September of their first school year. If they fail to do so, they lose the benefit of their admission.

Pre-selection

After examination by an internal jury of a file including :

  • a copy of the Diplôme de fin de1er cycle from a French or foreign higher music education establishment in the discipline concerned ;
  • a curriculum vitae.

Admission

  1. one work to be chosen from list A, posted on 10 December ;
  2. one work to be chosen from list B, posted on 10 December;
  3. piano harmonisation of a Romantic theme, followed by two variations;
  4. improvisation lasting 5 to 8 minutes in a set form and/or language to be chosen from two ;
  5. improvisation of three short pieces, lasting approximately 5 minutes in total, on a single element.
  6. an interview in French on the candidate's motivations (approximately 15 minutes).

Rounds 3, 4 and 5 are preceded by a 30-minute practice session without an instrument.

Students who have passed the piano, piano accompaniment, vocal accompaniment or voice conducting courses at the Paris and Lyon CNSMDs are exempt from tests1 and 2.

Candidates admitted to the competitive entrance examination for the2nd cycle who are not nationals of French-speaking countries must present, before 30 June preceding their first enrolment at the Conservatoire, a certificate issued by a body approved by the French government attesting to a level of French at least equal to B1 on the Council of Europe's scale of common reference levels, before 10 December following their first enrolment at the Conservatoire, a certificate issued by a body recognised by the French government attesting to a level of French at least equal to B2 on the Council of Europe's scale of common reference levels.
