The musicology and analysis department places scholarship, research and musicological mediation at the heart of its teaching guidelines. The courses on offer examine the musical heritage from the point of view of instrumental and hermeneutic interpretation, as well as artistic creation.

The department includes courses in writing, composition and conducting, which train composers and conductors, and contribute to the erudition of performers, musicologists and pedagogues.

Training in instrumental disciplines has been at the heart of the Paris Conservatoire's mission since it was founded in 1795. In the aftermath of the French Revolution, the Republic was looking for high-calibre musicians capable of celebrating its values and triumphs, giving artists a central role in society.

With around a hundred students and 25 renowned artists and teachers, pioneers or heirs to the "baroque revolution", the early music department trains performers in historical instruments.

The Jazz and Improvised Music department welcomes around 80 students each year. Supervised by a team of eleven teachers, they receive a high level of theoretical, practical and experimental training.
Each class is a workshop where young musicians compose, arrange and improvise.
