Entrance exam

Jazz (2nd cycle)

Opening date for registration :  10 October 2024

Closing date for registration :  15 November 2024

Exam dates : Présélection : dépôt des dossiers du 10 octobre au 15 novembre 2024 / Admission : épreuves 21 février 2025 (écrit) et du 24 au 27 février 2025 (auditions et entretiens) au Conservatoire de Paris.

Description :

This cycle is open to candidates who hold a Diplôme national supérieur professionnel de musicien (DNSPM) in the same discipline in France, or an equivalent diploma from a higher cycle abroad.

Candidates who do not obtain a full1st cycle diploma until the end of the school year may take the entrance examination by submitting a school leaving certificate specifying their situation. If they are successful in the competitive entrance examination, they will not be granted final admission until they have presented the full diploma required, no later than 30 September of their first school year. If they fail to do so, they lose the benefit of their admission.

Pre-selection : by an internal jury

The application must include :

  • A detailed presentation of an artistic project explaining the applicant's personal aesthetic approach;
  • A letter of motivation
  • A CV;
  • A video of 30 minutes maximum in which the candidate performs the pieces with which he or she presents his or her writing and improvisation concept.

Admission Admission: from 19 to 22 February 2024 at the Paris Conservatoire.

  1. Written tests: Mise en loge open piano (4 hours)
  • Writing for a big band (1 page);
  • Develop a composition based on a theme or rhythmic cell on 2 staves;
  • History of jazz: Write a text on each of the 3 questions asked.

  1. Audition: (30 minutes maximum)
  • Programme: A personal composition arranged for a group chosen from among our students (a quintet maximum); an arrangement of a piece from the standard repertoire for the same group. Rehearsals must be held in advance with students from the department. The personal composition should allow the candidate to express his/her own aesthetic direction.
  • Sight-reading of a standard on the piano (for non-pianist candidates): Dressing room 15 min.

  1. Interview in French on the candidate's motivations (approximately 15 minutes).

N.B. : Candidates admitted to the competitive entrance examination for the2nd cycle who are not nationals of French-speaking countries must present, before 30 June preceding their first enrolment at the Conservatoire, a certificate issued by a body approved by the French government attesting to a level of French at least equal to B1 on the Council of Europe's scale of common reference levels, before 10 December following their first enrolment at the Conservatoire, a certificate issued by a body recognised by the French government attesting to a level of French at least equal to B2 on the Council of Europe's scale of common reference levels.
