Objectives and content
Learning the language and instrumental technique of the drums, through listening, reading and practising, with the aim of acquiring and deepening knowledge of this key instrument of the jazz idiom, as well as developing autonomy in playing situations (informal or otherwise).
This group course is aimed primarily at non-drumming beginners in the department, but is open to all levels.
Identifying, understanding and handling the elements of the drum kit
- How to position yourself effectively
- Hold your sticks correctly and understand the mechanism of the strike
- Work on the various rudiments (roll, curl, grind, flange, etc.)
- How to read a musical text and interpret it (on pad and/or drums)
- Learn how to read and write a drum score
- Coordinate and disassociate the 4 limbs
- Play and analyse jazz patterns, as well as patterns from different musical styles and genres
- Work on the form and accompaniment of soloists.
- Set up a shared playlist for pad and drum work.

Assessment terms and conditions
Examination: Play a short text of low difficulty seen during the year, and a Standard to be performed with a rhythm section (bass/piano). The pieces are given 6 weeks before the exam.
