  • Objectives and content

    1st cycle:

    To enable drummers to deepen their technical knowledge of the instrument, and to enrich their musical and creative discourse by working in all areas of jazz and improvised music.

    Work on tempo, based on the study of emblematic rhythmic figures from key periods in the history of jazz drumming, around the snare drum, then the ride cymbal, then the other foot and skin elements, and various rhythmic figures allowing the agility and independence of the four limbs.

    Work on sound and form, based on the study of notes and transcriptions of accompaniment parts and solos by the greatest historical masters of jazz drumming, in all styles, from Baby Dodds to Ed Blackwell, via Joe Jones, Gene Krupa, Kenny Clarke, Max Roach, Phillie Joe Jones, Elvin Jones, Tony Williams, Paul Motian, Jack DeJohnette, etc.

    Polyrhythmic work, more specifically :

    • from the study of other rhythmic traditions specifically from Africa or the East, in coordination with the Indian Music class and various outside contributors,
    • study of recordings and transcriptions of various movements that have emerged since the 1980s.

    Development of free improvisation skills, in coordination with lessons in generative improvisation.

    Preparation for the solo part of the DNSPM final exam.

    2nd cycle:

    Work focused on the student's specific requests or shortcomings, in consultation with the Department's teachers.

    Preparation for recitals in the1st and2nd years of the2nd cycle.
