  • Course objectives and content

    Training for composers includes courses in instrumental composition, new technologies applied to composition, analysis and orchestration, as well as a range of compulsory complementary disciplines.

     

    The Diplôme National Supérieur Professionnel de Musicien (DNSPM) in Composition is awarded to students who have obtained all of the following awards :

      ECTS
    - Certificate in Composition and Certificate A or B in New Technologies 128

    - A certificate or attestation in each of the following compulsory complementary disciplines:

    - Analysis - composers

    - Modern language (or French as a foreign language)

    - Introduction to ensemble conducting for composers

    - Introduction to orchestration

    - Practical aspects of the profession 1 and 2

    - Professional situations

    The distinction (Très Bien, Bien or Assez Bien) qualifying the diploma is that awarded by the jury at the end of the final examination.

     

    The DNSPM in Composition is also awarded to students who did not obtain a distinction in the final examination of the1st cycle, but whose results in the 1st and2nd year examinations so permit, in accordance with the procedures described in Title I - article 5 of the study regulations.

    A partnership between the Conservatoire national supérieur de musique et de danse de Paris and Sorbonne-Université enables Conservatoire students who so wish, and who are admitted to the 1st cycle, to obtain, together with the Conservatoire's 1st cycle diploma, and subject to fulfilling the conditions for enrolment at the university, the Bachelor degree of Music and Musicology from Sorbonne-Université, including the Diplôme National Supérieur Professionnel de Musicien (DNSPM) from the CNSMDP, and validation at the university of four 26-hour courses, spread over four semesters, chosen from the "Domaines musicologiques" teaching units.                                
                                    
    Students are free to choose at which stage of their studies at the Conservatoire (1st or 2nd cycle) they wish to begin this university course.                                
                                    
    Registration and payment of university fees are required to follow the courses.

Pre-selection on the basis of a portfolio by an internal jury:

The application must include: 3 scores by the candidate, with at least one recording:

  • Paper scores must be sent by 30 November 2023 at the latest by post (date as postmark), together with the dedicated form, in at least 3 bound or stapled copies.
  • Scores in PDF format and the audio recording(s) should be uploaded to your candidate space.

Display and transmission of results: Monday 18 December 2023

Eliminatory (musical training test): Tuesday 6 February 2024 at 9.30 a.m.

Exemption: at their own initiative, holders of the Diplôme d'Etat or Certificat d'Aptitude de formation musicale issued by the Ministry of Culture, as well as holders of the certificat de formation musicale instrumentrumentistes du Conservatoire de Paris, students or former students of the accompaniment or writing classes of the Conservatoire de Paris and the CNSMD de Lyon and external candidates who have already obtained a mark of 90/100 or higher in this test may request to be exempted from this test.

Results posted: Tuesday 6 February 2024 from 2.45 pm

Eligibility :

  • Timbre and style recognition test, and listening commentary: Tuesday 6 February 2024 at 3 pm (5 extracts relating to several periods and geographical areas)
  • Twentieth-XXIst century composition test: 7 days' homework based on given material and a set formation (maximum 8 instruments), the candidate must compose a short piece using contemporary compositional elements, using all or part of the given material: subject sent by email on Tuesday 23 January 2024 at 9am and due on Tuesday 30 January 2024 before 4pm. Exemption: holders of the Prix d'écriture XXe-XXIe siècles from the Conservatoire de Paris may, on their own initiative, request to be exempted from this test.
  • The jury will examine the candidate's scores.

Display and transmission of results: Wednesday 7 February 2024 from 5 p.m.

Admission :

  • Comparative analysis test: Thursday 8 February 2024. Preparation of 1? hours in the box without piano and oral examination of 20 minutes maximum in front of the jury. Comparison of 2 or 3 scores from the 17th century to the present day. Exemption: at their own initiative, candidates who hold a Certificat d'Analyse B or a Prix d'Analyse Théorique et Appliquée from the Paris Conservatoire may ask to be exempted from this test.

  • Interview with the jury, Friday 9 February 2024. Presentation of the candidate's background and work, followed by an interview in French with the jury. Length of test: 30 minutes maximum.

Display and transmission of results: Friday 9 February 2024 from 6 p.m.

N.B.: Candidates who are successful in the competition for entry to the 1st cycle who are not nationals of French-speaking countries must present, before 30 June preceding their first enrolment at the Conservatoire, a certificate issued by a body approved by the French government attesting to a level of French at least equal to B1 on the Council of Europe's scale of common reference levels.
