The Jazz and Improvised Music department welcomes around 80 students each year. Supervised by a team of eleven teachers, they receive a high level of theoretical, practical and experimental training.
Each class is a workshop where young musicians compose, arrange and improvise.

Jazz and contemporary music sound recording

In years 3 and 4, sound recording workshops in partnership with students in the master's cycle of the Jazz and Improvised Music class enable students to master the various aspects of sound recording as part of a jazz or improvised music project. Through these experiences, as well as masterclasses, they acquire method and confidence in the choice and implementation of sound recording devices, in line with both artistic and technical issues.

2nd cycle workshop

The workshop is the central laboratory of each year's class, where students practise the different modes of expression of jazz and improvised music. Here they can study the main trends and the most influential musicians in the history of jazz; develop their listening and analytical skills; acquire rhythmic and harmonic autonomy; work on phrasing, pulse and tempo; and create their own compositions.

Piano accompaniment

Piano accompaniment

From sight-reading alone or with partners, to the practice of transposition, orchestral and vocal ensemble reduction, improvised accompaniment and the study of the orchestral keyboard and contemporary piano, this teaching provides the technical fundamentals of piano accompaniment. Participation in classes, masterclasses and recordings also enables students to work in depth on works from the great instrumental repertoire. To complement this training, numerous workshops and concerts are organised, involving pianists in the life of the school.
