  • Course objectives and content

    Instrumental and vocal composition and/or mixed music. Increased work towards autonomy in the conception and realisation of a compositional project.

     

    The2nd cycle advanced diploma in Composition conferring the grade of Master (mention Très bien, Bien or Assez bien) is awarded to the student when he or she has obtained all the following awards :

      ECTS
    - The Composition Prize for Instrumental Music or Mixed Music 91

    - A certificate or attestation in one of the following disciplines, as appropriate:

    For students majoring in instrumental music,

    - An attestation or certificate in an optional complementary discipline, if the1st cycle of Composition was completed at the Conservatoire de Paris or if the student has a level equivalent to the A certificate in new technologies.

    - Certificate A in new technologies, if the1st cycle of composition was not completed at the Conservatoire de Paris and if the student does not have the equivalent level.

    For students in the "mixed music" major: an attestation or certificate in an optional complementary discipline.

This cycle is open by competitive examination to candidates who hold a1st cycle diploma in the same discipline from a French or foreign higher music teaching establishment.

Candidates who do not obtain a full1st cycle diploma until the end of the school year may take the competitive entrance examination by submitting a school leaving certificate specifying their situation. If they are successful in the competitive entrance examination, they will not be granted final admission until they have presented the full diploma required, no later than 30 September of their first school year. If they fail to do so, they lose the benefit of their admission.

Students of the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris who hold a Diplôme National Supérieur Professionnel de Musicien (DNSPM) from the Conservatoire de Paris in the same discipline with a distinction of "Très Bien" or "Bien" in the school year following its award are exempt from the entrance exam to the2nd cycle. within the limit of the statutory duration of studies in the1st cycle and those holding the DNSPM from the Conservatoire de Paris with mention Assez Bien who have been authorised by the jury of the DNSPM final exam to continue their studies in the2nd cycle in the same discipline the following school year, within the limits of the statutory duration of studies in the1st cycle (study regulations - article 5).

Pre-selection on the basis of applications by an internal jury:

The following documents, together with the application form, must be sent no later than Tuesday 27 February 2024 (date of postmark) and uploaded to the applicant's account:

  • A copy of the diploma awarded at the end of the1st cycle of composition
  • A curriculum vitae
  • A study plan setting out
    • The candidate's preferred direction (instrumental music or mixed music)
    • The reasons for applying
    • The general orientation of the personal study work that the candidate will carry out if admitted
  • Scores and recordings:
    • For instrumental music: 4 instrumental scores, including one piece for ensemble: 5 printed scores + PDF scores and recordings to be uploaded to the candidate's account.
    • For mixed music: 4 scores, including one mixed or electronic piece: 5 printed scores + PDF scores and recordings to be uploaded to the candidate's account.

Admission:

  • In-house work on instrumentation and orchestration lasting 7 days, subject sent by email on Thursday 30 May 2024 at 9am and due on Thursday 6 June before 9pm. Exemption: holders of a certificate in orchestration from the Conservatoire de Paris or the CNSMD de Lyon may, on their own initiative, request to be exempted from this test.
  • Analysis test: Thursday 13 or Friday 14 June 2024: preparation of 1? hours in the box without piano and oral examination of 20 minutes maximum in front of the jury. Nature of the test: 1 or 2 analyses of different periods. Exemption: holders of the Certificat d'Analyse B or the Prix d'Analyse théorique et appliquée du Conservatoire de Paris may, at their own initiative, apply for exemption from this test.
  • Interview with the jury: Thursday 13 or Friday 14 June 2024: Presentation of Master's programme, work and project, followed by an interview. Length of interview: 45 minutes maximum.

For admission to the2nd cycle - "mixed music" major, students must have obtained Certificate B in new technologies as part of the1st cycle in composition.

N.B. : Candidates admitted to the competition for admission to the2nd cycle who are not nationals of French-speaking countries must present, before 30 June preceding their first enrolment at the Conservatoire, a certificate issued by a body approved by the French government attesting to a level of French at least equal to B1 on the Council of Europe's scale of common reference levels, before 10 December following their first enrolment at the Conservatoire, a certificate issued by a body recognised by the French government attesting to a level of French at least equal to B2 on the Council of Europe's scale of common reference levels.
