Composition (3rd cycle PSL-SACRe)

Description :

Applicants must meet the university's admission requirements and hold a degree representing five years of specialized higher education in composition.

Step 1: Pre-selection based on application by an internal jury
  • A copy of the required diploma (Master 2 or equivalent);

  • A curriculum vitae in French specifying in particular the institutions where the candidate has trained, the teachers with whom he or she has worked, the prizes or other distinctions obtained, etc.

  • A at least two reference letters from well-known figures in the world of the arts and creativity (languages accepted: English or French)

  • A cover letter in French explaining the applicant's interest in taking this course: approximately 2,500 to 5,000 characters (NB: the desire to cooperate with other artists and with scientists must be evident and justified in the reasons for applying for this course)

  • The thesis proposal (10 typed pages, maximum 20 pages including visual documents) presenting the candidate’s project and its relevance to the SACRe doctoral program. This document may be in French or English

  • An artistic portfolio (art, design) tracing the evolution and recent developments of the candidate’s work and including the scores of 5 compositions by the applicant, at least 2 of which must be accompanied by a recording: these may be written for chamber
    and/or vocal ensembles, and/or soloists and/or ensembles and/or orchestra and/or mixed music and/or electroacoustic music alone.   • A list of compositions that the candidate plans to write during their doctoral studies

  • An optional letter mentioning the support of the prospective thesis director.

  • For candidates who are not nationals of Francophone countries, a certificate from an organization approved by the French government, attesting to a minimum level of C1 in French according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

N.B.: all required documents must be uploaded within the specified deadlines to the applicant portal for the entrance exam.

Any incomplete application or one submitted in multiple separate parts will be considered invalid.

Step 2: Shortlisting: interview with the jury An interview of approximately 20 minutes followed by 10 minutes of questions, focusing particularly on the candidate’s motivations and practiced-based research creation thesis proposal that must align with the criteria defined in the SACRe call for applications (see previous pages).
Step 3: Admission Composed of qualified figures external to the SACRe member institutions and PSL, this panel awards the five PSL-funded doctoral contracts following candidate auditions. It finalizes the list of successful candidates, along with a reserve list in the event of withdrawals. Each institution may only be awarded one doctoral contract funded by PSL.
