The Music, Sound and Image department is the only one of its kind to offer training in the profession of musician-director (sound and image), with its thousand and one applications in the music industry, live performance and creation - recording, sound recording and composition. Born out of the need for cutting-edge profiles at the crossroads of science and music, in the context of the Conservatoire's new expansion in the burgeoning audiovisual landscape of the 1980s, the department trains directors and producers who master both the technical language and that of music. Building on this heritage, the MSI department today still welcomes students who share a high-level education in both music (D.E.M Conservatoire level for music) and science (bac+2), at the heart of the life of the institution, its performers, its composers, its productions and its tremendous artistic effervescence.
After two years dedicated to teaching music, science and technology in a wide variety of disciplines, students embark on a dynamic project-based learning programme that encourages autonomy and the choice of a specialism in line with their desired career path.
Numerous partnerships enable students to learn their trade by doing, in real-life performance conditions, with experienced instrumentalists, dancers and professionals, through work placements or experiences in major music venues (Philharmonie de Paris, Opéra de Paris, Radio France, Ircam, The Hague, etc). With its educational and artistic openness to a wide range of aesthetics and approaches, this department opens the way to a multiplicity of possible itineraries, from production to musical and sound creation, via live performance. All share a solid scientific and musical expertise, nurtured by a lively and particularly rich alumni network.
