Course objectives and content
The course is organised into three main teaching units (TU):
- teaching unit 1: teaching and training
- teaching unit 2: developing a professional identity as a teaching musician
- teaching unit 3: drawing on research in the artistic and pedagogical fields
Each of these units groups together several skills modules:
- teaching students (UE1)
- training trainers (UE1)
- building an identity as a teaching musician (UE2)
- leading teams (UE2)
- designing and running an educational project (UE3)
- conducting research (UE3).
These credit-bearing modules vary in organisation and duration.

Teacher training in the musical training discipline is open to holders of a competitive examination (eligibility and admission tests):
- a State music teacher's diploma or a certificate of aptitude for music teacher's duties in another discipline, field or option, or a national higher professional musician's diploma or a diploma validating a first cycle of higher education in music or a European bachelor's or master's degree in music or the necessary validations in writing or musicology from the Conservatoire de Paris detailed in article 6 of the study regulations ;
and
- the baccalaureate or a French or foreign diploma that is exempt or equivalent.
Eligibility
Date of the tests: from 2 to 29 March 2024
Instrumental, vocal or ensemble performance:
Candidates will propose a programme of at least 20 minutes' duration, which they will perform alone or as part of an ensemble - or conduct - in their artistic discipline. Depending on the discipline, the programme must meet the conditions set out below and include :
for classical and contemporary instrumental disciplines and for singing: several works, at least one of which uses elements of contemporary writing ;
for jazz: one or more standards from before and after 1950;
for early music: works or fragments of works from different styles and periods;
for choral and orchestral conducting: at least two works from different periods and styles;
for traditional music: at least two works in different styles;
for contemporary music: at least two works in different styles;
for writing and composition: several works, including at least 10 minutes of personal work or composition;
for musicology and analysis: at least 10 minutes of a programme to be performed. This programme will include at least one work using elements of contemporary writing. This is supplemented by a 10-minute presentation by the candidate of his/her musical performance.
N.B.: Candidates must bring the musicians they need to perform their programme.
Candidates are exempt from the above test if :
- they hold a diploma conferring the grade of Master from one of the Conservatoires National Supérieurs de Musique et de Danse de Paris or Lyon;
or
- they have been accepted to follow or continue a second or third cycle of higher education in music provided by one of the Paris or Lyon Conservatoires Nationaux Supérieurs de Musique et de Danse;
or
- they have been accepted to continue their studies in writing or musicology at one of the Paris or Lyon Conservatoires National Supérieurs de Musique et de Danse beyond the required 180 ECTS credits.
Sight-reading :
-
- two sung sight-readings, one accompanied on the piano by a pianist made available by the Conservatoire de Paris, the other with a cappella lyrics (preceded by a dressing room with tuning fork) ;
- a deciphering on the piano of an accompaniment to a sung piece or its harmonisation played on the piano, chosen by the candidate (preceded by a performance on the piano).
Eligible candidates must sit the admission tests in the same year.
The benefit of eligibility is not retained.

- Written test of listening commentary and analysis (3h30)
- Written test of text commentary (3h30)
and
from 6 to 20 September 2024
- An interview with the jury (30 to 40 minutes maximum) comprising :
-
- an observation test based on the musical performance of one or more students (or groups of students for candidates in jazz or musical training)
-
- questions relating in particular to the content of the written tests, the candidate's musical and general knowledge, and his/her motivations and ideas about teaching.
An average of less than 5/20 in any of the admission tests is eliminatory.
N.B.: Candidates admitted to the competitive entrance examination for teacher training who are not nationals of French-speaking countries must present, before 10 December following their first enrolment at the Conservatoire, a certificate issued by a body approved by the French government attesting to a level of French at least equal to B2 on the Council of Europe's scale of common reference levels.
Applicants in receipt of a grant must submit the grant notification with their application by 7 December 2023 at the latest .
