Objectives and content
Acquire as broad a musical culture as possible through listening commentaries supplemented by summary sheets for each subject.
Study of the Western repertoire from the 17th to the 21st century. All genres will be covered; opera will be dealt with in relation to the question of staging and performance. Iconography may be integrated into this work. Meetings with artists (in particular performers, conductors and directors) may also be organised in this context.

Entrance terms and conditions
This course is compulsory for students on the1st Cycle of Composition. Students who have a prize in one of the main disciplines of the Advanced Cycle in Musicology (Theoretical and Applied Analysis, Aesthetics, History of Music or Careers in Musical Culture), a Bachelor's degree or a Master's degree in Musicology from the University are exempt from this course.

Assessment terms and conditions
Continuous assessment
This accounts for 50% of the final mark. It takes into account attendance, class participation and marks for individual oral presentations.
Final exam
Oral test: 2-hour practice session and 30-minute appearance before the jury.
Commentary on three documents (a score, a text, an iconographic document).
