Course objectives and content
The course is organised into three main teaching units (TU):
- teaching unit 1: teaching and training
- teaching unit 2: developing a professional identity as a teaching musician
- teaching unit 3: drawing on research in the artistic and pedagogical fields
Each of these units groups together several skills modules:
- teaching students (UE1)
- training trainers (UE1)
- building an identity as a teaching musician (UE2)
- leading teams (UE2)
- designing and running an educational project (UE3)
- conducting research (UE3).
These credit-bearing modules vary in organisation and duration.

Teacher training is available in all disciplines except music education, on the basis of a competitive examination (eligibility and admission tests) to holders of :
- a State music teacher's diploma or a certificate of aptitude for music teacher's duties in another discipline, field or option, or a national higher professional musician's diploma or a diploma validating a first cycle of higher education in music or a European bachelor's or master's degree in the discipline, and where appropriate the field and option, of the certificate of aptitude required;
and
- the baccalaureate or a French or foreign diploma recognised as exempt or equivalent.
Candidates are exempt from the eligibility tests if they have been accepted to follow or to continue, in the discipline and, where applicable, the field and option of the expected certificate of aptitude, a second or third cycle of higher education in music provided by one of the Paris or Lyon national conservatories of music and dance.
Eligibility
Test dates: from 2 to 29 March 2024
Eligible candidates must sit the admission tests in the same year.
The benefit of eligibility is not retained.
Instrumental performance Instrumental performance: at the time of registration, candidates propose a programme of at least 30 minutes, comprising works (or fragments of works) in different styles, including at least one work from the 17thcentury , one work from the 18th century and one work in which the instrument plays the role of basso continuo. Candidates must indicate the timing of the works and bring with them three copies of the scores of the proposed works.
For part of the programme, candidates may perform as part of an ensemble.
The Paris Conservatoire can provide an accompanying harpsichordist at the time of the test.
Based on the candidate's proposal, the jury chooses a programme of approximately 20 minutes.

- Written test of listening commentary and analysis (3h30)
- Written test of text commentary (3h30)

from 6 to 20 September 2024
An interview with the jury (30 to 40 minutes maximum) comprising :
- an observation test based on the musical performance of one or more students (or groups of students for candidates in jazz or musical training)
- questions relating in particular to the content of the written tests, the candidate's musical and general knowledge, and his/her motivations and ideas about teaching.
An average of less than 5/20 in any of the admission tests is eliminatory.
N.B.: Candidates admitted to the competitive entrance examination for teacher training who are not nationals of French-speaking countries must present, before 10 December following their first enrolment at the Conservatoire, a certificate issued by a body approved by the French government attesting to a level of French at least equal to B2 on the Council of Europe's scale of common reference levels.
Applicants in receipt of a grant must submit the grant notification with their application by 7 December 2023 at the latest .
