Organ improvisation

This class offers a specific approach to improvisation for organists, in line with the French tradition of organ improvisation. Drawing on a wide range of experiences - collective improvisation, free improvisation, improvisation on a theme, improvisation based on given elements, or improvisation in relation to silent films, theatre, dance, circus, electronics, etc. - instrumentalists acquire a freedom of play and a capacity for invention in a wide range of styles. Rhythmic, harmonic and melodic forms and languages of the past are studied and practised in depth. At the same time, cross-disciplinary projects and public sessions with guest artists provide the class with an eminently contemporary approach, echoing a wide variety of aesthetics and expressions.

Through exploration of the instrument's repertoire, historical perspective and in-depth technical work, this course aims to develop mastery of the instrument and a critical approach to interpretation. Particular attention is paid to listening to one's body, in order to prevent the aches and pains associated with playing the instrument. The face-to-face teaching approach allows for personalised learning, helping each student to reach his or her full potential.

Fortepiano

The course is devoted to the study of historical piano playing on original and facsimile instruments: German, Viennese and French pianofortes (1770-1900) and an introduction to the clavichord. It combines practice in musical performance and specific techniques with research into the repertoires and interpretation of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, as well as the creation of new repertoires. Students are made aware of the professional context through off-site projects, visits to collections of pianofortes, restorers' workshops and museums. They also take part in cross-disciplinary projects with other classes (composition classes, instrumental disciplines, FSMS, etc.).
