Review of the first session of the 'Artist as a Teacher' training
Updated 18 March 2025
As part of Work Package 5 of the IN.TUNE alliance, dedicated to developing new capacities and innovation in learning and teaching, 25 teachers from member institutions participated in the first in-person session of the "Artist as a Teacher" training at the Royal Conservatoire of The Hague. This training offered an opportunity for reflection and practice on the role of the artist as a teacher.
Three teachers from the Conservatoire de Paris, Eliane Reyes, Sébastien Thill, and Michaël Ertzscheid, took part in this training, which began with an institutional presentation of the IN.TUNE alliance and its role in creating long-term structural strategies in education, research, and innovation, serving society.
Several activities and group interactions took place: solving pedagogical issues in teams; discussions on the teacher’s role as a "coach" and co-creator of knowledge, aiming to understand the student's intentions in artistic practice; and essential learning conditions (mindset, health and well-being, motivation, and goals). It was particularly emphasized that creating a healthy and supportive learning environment is crucial for students' development. Participants exchanged best practices for maintaining a balance between academic rigor and emotional support.
The session on feedback and assessment was especially insightful. Various feedback models (critique, advice, and feedback) were examined, along with cognitive biases that may influence evaluation. Participants discussed the construction of assessment models, emphasizing clarity, coherence with teaching, and intelligibility for students. This reflection helped to better understand how evaluations can support students’ learning and progress.
