    1st advanced cycle

    Advanced training for instrumentalists

    Knowledge of the repertoire.

    Preparation for the profession of concert and continuo player (opera and chamber music).

    Awareness of the professional context

    Study of the repertoire in correlation with the musicology and organology of each stylistic period.

    2nd advanced cycle

    1st higher cycle

    Examinations

    At the end of the1st year:

    Harpsichord:

    - a set of works or excerpts from works chosen by the jury from a 30-minute programme drawn from the repertoire worked on by the student during the year. This programme must be submitted to the Head of Department at least three weeks before the examination.

    Maximum duration: approximately 15 minutes

    Bass continuo:

    Maximum 15-minute programme, part of which will be prepared without the teacher.

    At the end of the2nd year:

    Harpsichord:

    - a set of works or excerpts from works chosen by the jury from a 40-minute programme drawn from the repertoire worked on by the student during the year. This programme must be submitted to the Head of Department at least three weeks before the examination.

    Maximum duration: approximately 20 minutes

    Bass continuo:

    Programme lasting a maximum of 15 minutes, part of which will be prepared without the teacher.

    DNSPM final examination

    Public examinations :

    Harpsichord (duration: 30 minutes maximum) :

    A set of works or excerpts from works chosen with the teacher's agreement from the repertoire worked on by the student during the year. This programme must be submitted to the Head of Department at least three weeks before the examination.

    Continuous bass (duration: 15 minutes maximum):

    A programme of the student's choice. This programme, prepared with the teacher, must be submitted to the Head of Department at least three weeks before the examination.

    The1st cycle harpsichord certificate and the1st cycle basso continuo certificate are awarded to students who pass the DNSPM final examination.

    The certificate is awarded on the basis of the grade awarded by the jury at the end of the DNSPM final examination.

    2nd year recitals

    1st year recital (not open to the public):

    Harpsichord: a programme lasting between 40 and 45 minutes (a maximum not to be exceeded under any circumstances), consisting of at least four works to be chosen from the first ten categories below, with two works from categories 1 to 5, and two works from categories 6 to 10. Without exceeding the time limit, students may also include a work from category 11 in their programme.

    Late 16th and 17th centuries:

    • a piece (or group of pieces) by an Italian composer (Claudio Merulo, Ascanio Mayone, Girolamo Frescobaldi, Michelangelo Rossi, Bernardo Storace, etc.) ;
    • a piece (or group of pieces) by an English composer (William Byrd, Peter Philips, John Bull, Thomas Tomkins, Orlando Gibbons, etc.);
    • a piece (or group of pieces) by a German composer (Johann Jakob Froberger, Matthias Weckmann

    Weckmann, Johann Kaspar Kerll, Dietrich Buxtehude, Johann Kuhnau, etc.) ;

    • a piece (or group of pieces) by a French composer (Jacques Champion de Chambonnières, Louis Couperin, Nicolas-Antoine Lebègue, Jean-Henry d'Anglebert, Louis Marchand, etc.);
    • a piece (or group of pieces) by a composer from another European country (Iberian, Dutch, etc.) (Antonio de Cabezon, Francisco Correa de Arauxo, Joan Cabanilles, Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck, Jan Adam Reincken, etc.).

    18th century:

    • a piece (or group of pieces, or a concerto) by Johann Sebastian Bach ;
    • a piece (or a group of pieces, or a concerto) by a German composer other than Bach (George Frideric Handel, Georg Philipp Telemann, Bach's sons, Joseph Haydn, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, etc.);
    • a piece (or group of pieces) by an Italian or Iberian composer (Domenico Scarlatti, Benedetto Marcello, Domenico Cimarosa, Antonio Soler, José Antonio de Nebra, Carlos de Seixas, etc.);
    • a piece (or group of pieces) by a French composer (François Couperin, Jean-François Dandrieu, Jean-Philippe Rameau, Jacques Duphly, Claude Balbastre, etc.);
    • a piece (or group of pieces) by a composer from another country (Thomas Chilcot, Thomas Augustine Arne, Joseph-Hector Fiocco, Jean-Baptiste Loeillet, Georg Benda, etc.).

    Contemporary period (optional):

    • a piece (or a group of pieces, or a concerto, or a piece of chamber music) by a composer from the 20th and 21st centuries (Manuel de Falla, Francis Poulenc, Béla Bartok, György Ligeti, Henrik-Mikolaj Gorecki, etc.).

    Continuous bass

    (final examination at the end of the1st or2nd year):

    Under the guidance of their teacher, students will prepare a programme of no more than 40 to 45 minutes of music,

    It must include at least :

    - a vocal or instrumental work by J.S. BACH

    - a vocal or instrumental work of French music from the 17th or 18th century

    - a vocal or instrumental work of Italian music from the 17th century.

    The rest of the programme is completely free.

    The student will be responsible for assembling his or her team and organising the rehearsals in advance: as well as being judged on the performance of his or her continuo, the student will also be judged on his or her ability to assemble his or her team, to organise and lead the rehearsals and to give everyone the necessary start and energy at the moment of performance.

    Students will perform their continuo mainly on the harpsichord, but may also use an organ if they wish.

    In consultation with the teacher, he or she will choose the instrument(s) to be used.

    2nd year recital (public) :

    A free recital, lasting no more than 50 minutes (see specific technical sheet).

    The Harpsichord and Continuo Bass Prize is awarded to the student who obtains an award in each of the 22nd year recitals.

    The Harpsichord and Continuo Bass Prize is awarded by the jury for the free recital in the2nd year of the2nd cycle.
