Filmed music: Artistic direction and sound recording

INFORMATIONS

  • Objectives and content

Know how to record sound from a complex set in a situation where simultaneous images have to be captured.

Have a high level of mastery of the entire image post-production chain.

Know how to interact and communicate in the interests of a project with the entire picture team (director, assistant or musical advisor, picture editor) and the production team (planning, forecasting technical production resources).

Expert knowledge of data exchange formats, picture editing methods, editing session conformation tools, mixing and broadcasting standards imposed by broadcasters.

    Content

After a brief theoretical approach which will present the context in which today's film music projects are produced (resources, human and technical organisation, production constraints, etc.) and which will introduce the difficulties and challenges of working together to achieve a successful recording of music on film, the course will be based on a series of exercises which are highly representative of the difficulties linked to the presence of image recording at the same time as sound recording. These exercises, taken from complex, real-life projects, will cover all the stages involved in producing a project:

    - Sound recording: the complexity of miniaturising or minimising the presence of sound recording systems in the image.

    - Editing: presentation of the different methods of post-production, particularly when faced with the problem of synchronisation with the image. Presentation of collaborative work between a picture editor and a sound editor.

Presentation of the different methods of exchanging data between professionals.

Presentation of an organisation for sharing data associated with the sound and picture editing stages.

Mixing, with a presentation of the broadcasting standards imposed in Europe today and the aesthetic choices that can be made when editing images.

The case of recording an opera with soloists and choir in a complex staging will be presented and the students will be asked to mix a sequence in accordance with current television broadcasting standards.
