Course objectives and content
This cycle is open by competitive examination to candidates who meet the conditions for enrolment at the University and who hold either a Master's degree in singing, instrumental music, jazz, early music or instrumental or vocal chamber music or a French or foreign 2nd
cycle diploma from a French or foreign higher music education establishment, or a DFS from the CNSMDP or a DNESM from the CNSMDL, wishing both to perform at a high level and to carry out research for and through performance, while at the same time taking part in a dynamic process of professional integration, i.e. :
- performing in different aspects of the performing arts (recital, chamber music,
soloist with orchestra, etc.) ;
- carrying out research leading to the writing of a thesis in French in the fields of performance, repertoire, creation, organology, artistic and cultural production, etc.
Throughout the course, research production and instrumental or vocal practice are closely combined to enable students to:
- write a thesis in French on the subject of their research ;
- carry out and develop a performing activity that feeds into and builds on their research.
Students are supervised by 2 teachers:
- a Conservatoire de Paris teacher appointed by the Director of the Conservatoire on the student's proposal ;
- a research supervisor who is a member of the University, in accordance with the thesis charter of the Université Paris-Sorbonne.
On final admission, following an interview at the Conservatoire, the student or group of students will draw up a personalised training programme in the fields of research and artistic practice, to which they will commit themselves.
artistic practice that they undertake to follow from their 1st year, including :
- a schedule of work sessions and meetings with the university research director ;
- a schedule of instrumental or vocal work sessions with at least two different Conservatoire teachers, including the professor in charge; for the duration of their Doctorate in Music - Research and Practice, students have 35 instrumental or vocal work sessions of 2 hours each, with or without an accompanist, which may be spread over several years, consecutive or otherwise.
- doctoral study days organised jointly by the Conservatoire and the University;
- at least one doctoral seminar at the University;
- at least one semester-long doctoral course at the University;
- master classes;
- the student's public performances, which may include chamber music;
- obligations towards the Conservatoire and the University;
- possibly one or more periods abroad;
- activities with various professional organisations;
- any other arrangements deemed necessary for his/her training.
This training programme is drawn up by the student or group of students in collaboration with the Director of the Conservatoire or her representative, the University's Head of Doctoral Studies in Music and Musicology, the Director of Music Studies and Research at the Conservatoire, the Head of the relevant department, the Conservatoire's Professor and the University's Director of Research. It may be renewed each year. A report is drawn up annually, assessing attendance and the progress of the work in accordance with the regulations of each institution.

This cycle is open by competition to candidates who meet the conditions for enrolment at the university and who hold one of the following diplomas in singing, instrument*, jazz, early music* or chamber music (*in the main instrumental disciplines taught at the Paris Conservatoire):
- Master's degree or2nd cycle diploma awarded by a French or foreign higher education establishment specialising in music;
- DFS from the Conservatoire national supérieur de musique et de danse de Paris ;
- DNESM from the Conservatoire national supérieur de musique et de danse de Lyon.
Candidates for the entrance examination who are not nationals of French-speaking countries must submit, in support of their application for the entrance examination, a certificate issued by a body approved by the French government attesting to a level of French at least equal to C1 on the Council of Europe's scale of common reference levels.
