English lyrical diction (singers)

INFORMATIONS

  • Objectives and content

    To enable students to acquire the knowledge they need to tackle works in English.
    Phonetics and diction: notions of phonetics, international phonetic alphabet, tonic accents in words and sentences, listening and recitation work, sung diction, poetic rhythm, understanding and translating texts to be sung, exploration of different accents.
    Practical English: fluency in oral and written comprehension and expression, simulated situations (interviews, competitions, auditions, master classes, etc.), preparation of CVs and covering letters, music-specific vocabulary.

    This course is open only to singing students with a basic knowledge of English.

  • Assessment terms and conditions

    PLACEMENT TEST
    As soon as they are admitted, students take a test which determines whether they are assigned to 1st or 2nd year.
    In the 1st year, students sit three exams (2 during the year and one at the end of the year), which allow them to continue their studies in the 2nd year (distinction TB, B or AB).
    The examination at the end of the 1st year consists of :
    - a written test to check the acquisition of basic phonetic skills ;
    - an oral test comprising 1 compulsory aria to be recited and sung.
    FINAL EXAMINATION
    The Certificate examination takes place at the end of the 2nd year and consists of an oral test including :
    . melodies, recitatives and arias chosen by the candidate, to be recited and sung by heart;
    . a test of the singer's ability to sing independently: reading, translation and phonetic commentary on an extract (chosen by the jury) from a work in the vocal repertoire (opera, oratorio, song cycle, etc.) proposed in its entirety by the candidate (the phonetic commentary will focus solely on the role prepared by the candidate).

    Students exempted from the basic linguistic notions course may sit the Certificate in 1st year.

  • Duration of studies

    Two years (possibly three) at the rate of :
    1st year: 1 hour of phonetics and diction (group class) + 1 hour of practical English (group class) per week;
    2nd year: ½ hour of lyric diction (individual class) per week.
    One of the two years may be repeated.
