Ecriture Benesh: Fundamentals of the system / From the alphabet to the language of movement - 1st cycle 1st year

INFORMATIONS

  • Objectives and content

The 1st cycle in Benesh Movement Notation is designed to provide complementary skills and knowledge for careers related to dance and, more broadly, to the body in movement. The notation classes are taught in a constant to-and-fro between practice and theory: time devoted to performing in movement alternates with time spent studying at the desk. Complementary disciplines (musical training, AFCMD, choreographic culture, drawing, etc.) enhance and enrich the learning of Benesh notation.
The 1st year enables students to learn about the vertical movements of the human body, in order to be able to read and write solo scores. Learning the signs and fundamentals of the Benesh system is linked directly to close observation of the body in movement, and to a process of analysis of various parameters: body organisation, transitions and locomotion, co-ordination, relationship to space (location, orientation, path), relationship to time (duration, rhythm, phrasing), dynamics, etc.
Continuous assessment takes the form of practical written work, which students are given at the end of each training session, and thematic compositions based on a subject taught and/or a graded subject, all of which are compiled in a writing dossier. At this level, particular attention is paid to mastering the grammar of the Benesh system and to ensuring that students acquire a clear and precise handwriting style, both of which are essential for successful completion of the course.
