Objectives and content
The ability to play a simple figured bass from 17th century Italy and early 18th century France, and to recognise their respective contexts.
A general understanding of the development of basso continuo music in the 17th and early 18th centuries, with particular emphasis on the harp.
Year 1
- 17th century Italian basso continuo, theory and practice.
Second year
- late 17th century Italian and French (and English) and early 18th century French. Analysis of the more complicated ciphers, with a look at the beginnings of the pedal harp.
- triple harp: introduction, practice of basso continuo. Ensemble playing with other early instruments is highly recommended.
