Continuous bass (Harp)

  • Objectives and content

    The ability to play a simple figured bass from 17th century Italy and early 18th century France, and to recognise their respective contexts.

    A general understanding of the development of basso continuo music in the 17th and early 18th centuries, with particular emphasis on the harp.

    Year 1

    • 17th century Italian basso continuo, theory and practice.

    Second year

    • late 17th century Italian and French (and English) and early 18th century French. Analysis of the more complicated ciphers, with a look at the beginnings of the pedal harp.
    • triple harp: introduction, practice of basso continuo. Ensemble playing with other early instruments is highly recommended.

    Internal audit at the end of the first year.

    Continuous assessment at the end of the second year.
