Arrangement (Song or Jazz) FSMS

INFORMATIONS

  • Objectives and content
    • Be familiar with the basic concepts of harmony and jazz writing.
    • Be able to analyse a jazz extract or work by listening to it.
    • Be familiar with the tools specific to jazz aesthetics and songs (numbers, form, harmony, voicings, etc.).
    • Master the practical aspects of composition, arranging and orchestration by learning a language linked to improvisation.

The aim of this course is to introduce students to various arranging techniques and, more generally, to writing for various small ensembles. The acquisition of technical knowledge will normally be extended through practical work on projects.

    Jazz and improvised music :

Study of language and vocabulary (development of melodic-rhythmic ideas, analysis of different traditional forms, organisation of musical content in a jazz context).

Study of writing techniques linked to arranging and orchestration, from small ensembles (trio, quintet) to large orchestras (bigband, jazz symphony).

Listening to and analysing examples in class.

Exercises to apply the different writing principles studied.

    World music and songs:

Analysing and comparing different versions of the same piece from an instrumental, historical and aesthetic point of view.

Writing for small ensembles: string quartet, wind quintet, brass quintet, saxophone ensemble, vocal ensemble, chamber orchestra and small orchestral ensembles. Practice arranging from a piano score

Learning rhythms and modes from world music.

Analysis of different aesthetic points of view on the same subject.

Listening and comparative analysis based on scores and sound examples.

The module culminates in the production of an original piece composed, arranged and orchestrated for instrumentation redefined each year according to the objectives of the class. Each student is responsible for the artistic direction of his or her arrangement.
